In earlier times, small boats were a common mode of transport along the river. Even today, some communities use traditional boats for local transport.

Floods and Environmental Concerns of Beki River

The Beki is prone to seasonal flooding, especially during the monsoon months (June to September). These floods often affect low-lying areas in Barpeta, causing erosion, property damage, and loss of crops.

⚠️ Recent Concerns:

  • Riverbank erosion in Kalgachia and Baghbar areas.
  • Sediment deposition affecting flow and depth.
  • Encroachment and deforestation near its banks.

Local authorities and environmental groups have called for riverbank protection, dredging, and afforestation to prevent further degradation.

Cultural and Social Role of Beki River

The Beki River is not just a lifeline but also a part of local culture. Festivals, fairs, and community events are often held near its banks. For many, the river holds religious and emotional significance, with locals performing rituals and immersions during traditional Assamese festivals.
